Guided tour on using the EasyReg database

EasyReg comes with its own database, in which you can store variables from the current input file, or retrieve variables from for a new input file. The database files involved are EASYREG.DB1 and EASYREG.DB2, with corresponding backup files ERDBBAK.DB1 and ERDBBAK.DB2. Only the latter two files are included on the setup disk. If you run EasyReg for the first time, the backup files ERDBBAK.DB1 and ERDBBAK.DB2 are automatically copied to EASYREG.DB1 and EASYREG.DB2, respectively. If you upgrade an older version of EasyReg, the latter is not done, in order to prevent the existing database files from being overwritten.

WARNING: The files EASYREG.DB1 and EASYREG.DB2 are random access files. If you try to import these files in a text editor or wordprocessor, they will be damaged.

How to retrieve data from the EasyReg database

In the EasyReg main window, click "File -> Get data -> Choose data from the EasyReg database". Then the following window appears.

DATABASE window 1

We are going to retrieve annual time series from the data base, and merge these time series with the Nelson-Plosser time series data already imported in EasyReg (See the guided tour on importing a former default EasyReg input file.) Thus, click "Search for annual time series". Then the following window appears.

DATABASE window 2

We are going to retrieve three time series for Sweden. The first one is LN[Consumption Sweden]. Double click this variable, and click "Select variable". Then the window changes to:

DATABASE window 3

Repeat this for LN[Investment Sweden] and LN[Income Sweden] and click "Make new input file". Then the window changes to:

DATABASE window 4

DATABASE window 5

DATABASE window 6

Click "Start EASYREG in current folder". Then the following window appears.

DATABASE window 7

This is the Nelson-Plosser data. As said before, we are going to merge the time series for Sweden with the Nelson-Plosser time series for the US already imported in EasyReg. Thus, click "Overwrite or merge". Then the following window appears.

DATABASE window 8

If you click "Merge these files", then the two data sets are merged, and you are done. The EasyReg main window will then appear, and you will be ready to use the merged data.

Viewing or editing the EasyReg database

If you want to view data in the database, or add variables to and/or delete variabled from the database, open File -> Current data -> View or edit the EasyReg database. Then the following window appears.

DATABASE window 9

This menu enables you to customize the EasyReg database, or view what is in it. However, I recommend to leave the EasyReg database as is.
