Research Interests

I study situation awareness in the cyber security domain, focusing on the cognitive aspects of the human analyst. I have an interest in methods to increase the awareness of events happening on the network through multi-sensor data fusion and visual analytics. In particular, I am working on the measurement of situation awareness and identifying methods to compare the SA of different analysts. I am also interested in comparing different visual analytic and data fusion tools and measuring their effects on human cognition.

Funded Research Projects

Development of PolyLab (Intramural Seed Funding, $10,000)

March 2016 - June 2017

Develop a cheating-resistant and polymorphic laboratory and homework system for use in cybersecurity. The system uses cryptographic hashes to give each student a unique-to-them version of the homework or lab assignment. Inside the virtual lab, the system generates the parameters for the lab systems to ensure that each student receives their own version. On the assessment side, the system allows the student to present their answers and compares those answers to the expected (for them) responses for automated assessment.

Open Source Workflow Collaboration, Integration and Training Co-Investigator with Jacob L. Graham (PSU Applied Research Lab for a government agency, $200,000)

August 2016 - July 2017

Developed and investigated workflow issues with specific geo-analytic open source software. Supervised a group of students (25) who worked through end-user, system administrator and developer issues with the software on servers, workstations and mobile devices. Documented issues and concerns that were found to improve workflow of end users in the disaster planning and management domain.

PennTap Internship Program (Intramural)

January 2013 - May 2015

Assisted in the selection of interns and placement into organizations for criminal intelligence and emergency management (EMA) and the state and local levels. Coordinated with external agencies to identify needs of the organizations. Held regular meetings for on-campus interns to meet the objectives of the external stakeholders. Identified methods of analysis of open source data to include social media to be used in criminal intelligence, and communication of disaster preparedness and response.

Applied Research Lab - Using Social Network Analysis of Social Media Data for Open Source Analysis (Intramural)

3 weeks Summer Effort June - August 2013

Supervised four undergraduate interns in the use of social media to explore the actions of violent extremist organizations in foreign countries.
